Springtime window cleaning is about more than just aesthetics!

It’s time to let the sun shine in, but the sun can’t penetrate dirty windows! Throughout the year, dirt and grime accumulates on your windows, making your building look a shabby and poorly maintained. Moreover, it blocks your view, it and blocks light from entering, making your interior surroundings look dark.  But perhaps the best reason to reach for your bucket and squeegee is that doing so will save you money in the long run.    

Dirty glass breaks more easily

Environmental contaminants such as hard minerals, oxidation from metal screens, acid rain, or overspray from nearby roadways make glass porous. Dirt and microorganisms enter the pores, which further weakens the glass, making it fragile and causing it to lose transparency. This is especially true during the hot summer months, when the heat allows the dirt and stains to bake onto the glass, causing permeate damage, which makes the glass more prone to breakage. Window seals and frames also suffer damage from excessive dirt buildup and heat, so it’s a good idea to get your windows cleaned before the hot summer months.

First, get yourself a Solstice Window Cleaning Starter Kit, a supply of Vitrex+ and some microfiber cloths. Vitrex+ leaves a protective film on the surface, so you can clean less often. It also evaporates quickly, leaving a clean and streak-free finish.  

Choose a cooler, overcast day for your window cleaning. Heat tends to cause glass cleaners to dry out too quickly, which will leave streaks on the glass. 

Before you begin, remove any accumulated dust, cobwebs and grease around the window frames, moldings and woodwork. This preliminary step will keep your cleaning water cleaner and reduce streaking on windows.  

Using your solstice scrubber, wet the window with your cleaning solution. Switch to your squeegee to remove the solution. Remember to always work your way down using an ‘s’ motion. Use a clean towel or a terrycloth rag to wipe the squeegee blade clean after every pass and to wipe any residual water on the bottom of the window sill.
