In December 2019, an outbreak of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was first detected in Wuhan, China, infecting hundreds of people and causing 82 deaths to date. The 2019-nCoV virus is in the same family of viruses as SARS and has never before been observed in humans. This virus does not appear to spread as easily as influenza, nor mutate as quickly. However, it can spread from one person to another. There is currently no vaccine against 2019-nCoV.
On January 21st, the first case of the 2019-nCoV coronavirus appeared in the U.S.; five cases have since been reported in the country. Here in Canada, two suspected cases of coronavirus have been detected in Ontario. Though the overall risk to Canadians remains low, public health agencies in Canada are already preparing to fight this new contagious virus.
